LABOR DAY RIDE @ MOUNTWOOD PARK HORSE CAMP
Beautiful
weather, good company, delicious food, scenic wooded
trails, lots of laughs by the camp-fire, and abundant
hospitality from the Wood County Horse Riding Club made for
a memorable week-end for all in attendance on this ride.
There were riders from Lancaster, Marietta, and Belpre, Ohio
and from Calhoun, Jackson, Gilmer, Pleasants, Wirt,
Harrison, Ritchie, Lewis, and Wood Counties in WV. On
Friday, 10 riders rode for 3 hours, 46 riders on Saturday
rode 5 hours, 20 riders on Sunday rode 4 ½ hours, and 13
riders on Monday rode 3 ½ hours. Saturday evening’s benefit
auction raised $150.00 for the Matthew’s family, club
members who lost everything in a house fire including their
beloved dog and were not fortunate enough to have
homeowner’s insurance.
For those club
members who have not had the opportunity to ride and camp at
the Mountwood Park Horse Camp and see first-hand the
results of the hard work Tara and Brent Patterson, along
the with the other members of the Wood County Riding
Club--They now have 12 stalls built, several tie lines, 16
electric hook-ups, two city water hydrants, a hitching post
to bathe the horses, nice restrooms with flush toilets,
three covered shelters with plenty of picnic tables, and
most importantly good trails. They have recently added
several miles of new trails with access to the rails to
trails that runs from Parkersburg to Clarksburg, WV.
Mountwood Park Horse Camp has ample parking for both day
riders and campers, along with plenty of room for portable
corrals or to put up additional tie-lines. While many of us
complain about losing access to good trail riding and the
lack of camping facilities in West Virginia for the trail
riders, Brent and Tara and many members of the Wood County
Riding Club have been working hard, and sacrificing
personally, to make a dream come true and are thrilled for
the opportunity to share it with others. They have hopes of
further expansion, but for now their efforts have certainly
made an impressive beginning and their efforts are
commendable. This was the perfect place to return to after
saying good-bye to our fellow riding buddy, Rodney Moss,
whose quiet humor and pleasant nature will be missed by all.

hookups, and plenty of primitive camping. City

showers. There are a few stalls, some tie lines
and hitching posts and people are welcome to set
up their portable corrals and put up their own
tie lines if they want. Backroads Pizza is
nearby and they deliver to the horse camp if
anyone wants to skip cooking. :) We'll do a
